The Book of Shadows was attributed by Gardner to an ancient, clandestine witch cult, which he claimed to have been initiated into. An American named "Lady Sheba" also transcribed her version of The Book of Shadows in the 1970s in America, but she also claimed to be a Gardnerian Witch, her version came much later than the original Gardnerian Book which Gardner started transcribing in the 1940s in England, Gerald Gardner is thus known as the "Father of Wicca", and first introduced his original Gardnerian Book of Shadows to people that he had initiated into the craft through his Bricket Wood Coven in the 1950s. The text shows influences from English and Celtic Folk-lore, the Enochian system of John Dee, Thelema, the Golden Dawn, Stregaria, Tantric Yoga, the KJV Bible and even Kipling. This version organises the material in chronological order and has estimated dates for each section, ranging from 1949 to 1961, as practitioners of Wicca always add their own spells to their copy of this book. "dharma, artha and kama " Vatsyayana's purpose is to set kama, or enjoyment of the senses, in context. Thus dharma or virtuous living is the highest aim, artha, the amassing of wealth is next, and kama is the least of the three.
Many people wish to believe that Vatsyayana wrote with a high moral purpose, but the evidence of the text is to the contrary. The Kama Sutra is amoral from beginning to end, advocating all sorts of opportunistic, selfish and unsocial behaviour, including seducing the wives of friends and strangers, raping peasant girls and, if one is a king, capturing and enslaving any woman one likes. This is one fascinating book.
